| Capriati breezes by Torrens Valero |
August, 26th 2003
US Open
People barely had time to find their seats. Cristina Torrens Valero was no
match for No. 6 seed Jennifer Capriati in her first round of the 2003 US
Open losing to the former semi-finalist 6-0, 6-1. In a windy and chilly
Arthur Ashe Stadium, Capriati breezed by Torrens Valero, opening with an ace
and never looking back.
The first set was
all Capriati and she was all business, wasting no time in matter-of-factly
dispatching the Spanish native. With only a few long volleys to break up the
monotony, Torrens Valero was her own worst enemy, sending shot after shot
long or wide, and ending up with 21 unforced errors to Capriati's nine.
In game six of the first set, Torrens Valero showed a little flash with her
first ace, but then followed it with a double fault.
Finally in game two of the second set, Torrens held serve to take what would
be her first and only game of the match. The crowd responded
enthusiastically clapping and cheering encouragement for the 28-year-old.
However, it was Capriati's night. Under a pink and orange sky, the
27-year-old veteran of 12 previous US Opens closed out the second set with a
total elapsed time of 35 minutes, barely long enough for either woman to
break a sweat.
Capriati will face Martina Sucha of Slovakia in the second round.
