Jennifer Capriati won the battle of the former
Roland Garros champions, stunning fellow-American Serena Williams on Tuesday
to secure a spot in the semi finals.
The 28-year-old Capriati, seeded seven, edged her 22-year-old opponent 6-3 2-6
6-3 in one hour and forty minutes.
This is Capriati's second straight win over Serena. The youngest of the
Williams sisters still holds a 9-6 life time edge in their head-to-head.
Capriati now faces sixth seeded Russian Anastasia Myskina who beat Venus
Williams in straight sets on Tuesday.
"It wasn't a great match. We were both nervous but I think I was a little
steadier than her at the end," Capriati said.
Serena blew many break point opportunities, only converting four of her 14
chances. She misfired 45 times to Capriati's 24.
After trading sets, Capriati, a winner here in 2001, jumped to a 3-1 lead in
the decider only to see Serena (the 2002 champ) fight back to even the contest.
Capriati firmed up her game and fought back from 0-30 in the eighth game to
reel off four straight points to go up 5-3 and finish the match when Serena
hit an unforced error.
