Capriati crushes Serna

September, 1st 2004
US Open

Jennifer Capriati continued her winning ways with a swift and efficient 52-minute dismantling of Magui Serna. The one-time doubles partners met in only their second career outing, with Capriati coming out on top.

Capriati opened the match with four sizzling service winners. It was uncertain from the onset of the match if Serna would even win one game, as she managed to muster only 10 points the entire first set. For the next 14 games, the "Jennerator" produced a power surge on serve that ignited an electrfying 6-0, 6-2 second-round victory.

Shrugging off her struggles of late, Capriati came out on fire and lit up the court blasting forehand winners at will. On her third set point, she smoked her signature flat forehand down the line for the clean winner.

In the third game of the second set, a triumphant Serna raised both arms in jubilation after executing a textbook perfect topspin lob giving her her first game of the match. She follwed the break with a hold and evened the second set at two games all. Sensing a potential shift in momentum Capriati got back on the case and closed out the last four games of the match.

In the third round, Capriati will take on Russian Vera Douchevina who earlier in the defeated Marion Bartoli in three sets.
