| Jennifer Capriati undergoes shoulder surgery |
January, 28th 2005
WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (TICKER) -- It may be some time before we see
Jennifer Capriati playing competitive tennis again.
Capriati underwent successful arthroscopic surgery Friday to repair a torn
labrum in her right shoulder. No timetable was given for the 28-year-old
American's return to the WTA Tour.
The injury caused her to miss this year's Australian Open, a tournament she
won in 2001 and 2002. She will have complete rest for five to seven days
before she can start exercising her shoulder.
The operation was performed in Wilmington by Dr. Craig Morgan, who said he
expects Capriati to return to a full playing schedule after rehab.
"I expect a complete recovery after rehabilitation," Dr. Craig Morgan said.
"Once rehabilitation is through, Jennifer can resume a full competitive
schedule."
Capriati's spokeswoman, Carla Schalman, said rehab could begin after five
days of rest, but did not immediately know when Capriati will return to the court.
Capriati hurt the shoulder at the Advanta Championships in November. The
injury forced her to miss the Australian Open, an event she won in 2001 and 2002.
A 14-time winner on the WTA Tour, Capriati's last victory came at the 2003
Pilot Pen Tournament in New Haven, Connecticut. Her only other major singles
title came at the 2001 French Open.
