| Capriati takes top spot |
October, 15th 2001
Jennifer Capriati has capped her remarkable comeback by being confirmed as
the top women's tennis player in the world. She replaces Martina Hingis as number one in the WTA rankings.
The American did just enough by reaching the quarter-finals of last week's
Porsche Grand Prix in Germany to knock Hingis off the top for the first time since May 2000.
Hingis needed to win in Filderstadt to stay at number one but was forced to
retire with an ankle injury during her semi-final against Lindsay Davenport.
Capriati has bounced back
following personal problems which threatened to wreck her career.
Seven years ago, she was arrested for possessing cannabis and shoplifting.
Now, she is on top of the world.
"It feels great," said Capriati. "I haven't really digested it yet - I think
I'll have to see it on paper first.
Of course, it's every kid's dream to be number one. For me I think you can
appreciate it more when you are older."
The 25-year-old American made a stunning start to the season by winning the
first two Grand Slam titles of the year at the Australian and French Opens.
Capriati then made it to the last four at Wimbledon and the US Open.
On the WTA tour, she took the title at Charleston and finished runner-up at
Oklahoma City, Miami, the German Open and the Canadian Open.
