CANADIAN OPEN 2nd ROUND

August, 14th 2002
Capriati D Taylor 6-4, 6-1

TOUR OFFICIAL: Okay.

Q. Jennifer, does your last win at this tournament seem a lifetime ago or do you remember it very clearly?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I always get Montreal and Toronto a little confused. I won them both so, yeah, but it has been awhile. Just I got to the finals but it was last year in Toronto that -- here, you know, it has been a while since I have gotten far. So it would be nice to do well.

Q. With Serena out, does it seem like this is more winnable now or would you rather have had another crack at her in the final?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: It really doesn't matter to me. I mean, we are on opposite sides of the draw and there is still a lot of good competitors out there and I just got to take it one at a time. I mean I have to -- I would have to get to the finals first to play her, and that's the way I look at it.

Q. Jennifer, tomorrow you're facing Ai Sugiyama and she was the one who upset you last week in L.A.; is this something to look forward to getting a little revenge back tomorrow?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Yeah, definitely. I mean that's the great thing about tennis, you know. You lose one week and then the next week you have another chance to redeem yourself. And, you know, it keeps going on like that. So, hopefully, I will just be more prepared tomorrow and play better and have a better day tomorrow.

Q. Was tonight's match a statement towards that fact that you're ready to make a stronger run for this championship?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Yeah, for here and also it's getting real close to the Open. So, I feel like it's coming together, just getting more confident and it's good to play the last two tournaments and you just got to get through it, like even if you have some bad losses or don't play the way you would like to play. You know, eventually, I think it'll click in and I have been doing a lot of hard work. You know, it just doesn't come right away so you have to give it time and then things start to click. So hopefully it's now.

Q. What exactly went wrong with that match against Sugiyama? For people who didn't see it, how did that match go?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Well, I mean I think I was flat and I did have a tough match the night before and, you know, to come back and play right away, you know, I just really didn't feel like I could move and just didn't have the zip out there at all. She was just not giving me a chance at all because she was playing well and -- so maybe it was more working hard the last couple weeks and, you know, on top of a hard match it just kind of all took effect and, you know, so maybe slow down things a bit and I'm just concentrating more on just the tennis.

Q. Is it good sign that you had -- I mean the one good part was you come in here fresh, you have had some time, do you feel fresh now?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Yeah, I do. You know, it's always nice to start over again and have a few days and come to a different city, and a city that you feel comfortable in, and that's nice and, you know, knowing that the U.S. Open is coming up soon, I mean that's also a big motivator. So, yeah, I mean, I feel like I can give it all this week because I'm not doing anything -- I'm not playing anything next week, so I just give it all I can now.

Q. You have been working hard in the last two weeks. Have you elevated your off-court training?

JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Yeah, a bit, yeah. I tried to just get in better shape and shed some weight and change diet things around. So, you know, altogether, you know, if you do things too much too soon maybe sometimes it takes little effect and it's a good thing just -- you'll see the worst results maybe first before you start seeing the payoff from it. So, hopefully, now it's starting to take effect.

Q. What are you doing differently, per se?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Just -- I mean, I don't want to get into it.

Q. Are you satisfied --
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Little secrets.

Q. Were you satisfied with your match tonight? Are there parts of your game tonight you feel that were better than you expected or some of them you wish to improve on?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: No. I'm pretty pleased with everything all around. I mean maybe I could have returned a little bit better, but towards the end, you know, I got into a better rhythm. I really attacked the net well. Maybe that had something to do with the doubles yesterday. I felt more comfortable and had a good practice yesterday for it.

Q. What about your serve? It was only 44 per cent or 43 per cent. What was wrong with that?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: When you go for it, you know, your percentage is not going to be so high. You can choose to either just spin it in and then your percentage is high. But I mean in these kind of matches is when you have got to take advantage, when you know they are easier then you have to take the chance to practise it, even if you're missing them. So I was really trying to go for it. So, you know, for the next time maybe, you know, it will work better. But I was definitely just going for it more and it's more difficult to make them in. You try to hit it hard.

Q. Jennifer, you said you were trying to shed some weight. Can you be more specific on what you are trying to accomplish and what your goal is and whether you are quicker? You looked quicker out there today.
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: That is just the main goal. It's not really weight. That's going to come with it, but it's just a matter of feeling more agile on the court and lighter and just feel more fluid. And, you know, maybe the last couple of months I haven't been moving as well as I think I have in the past, so I just wanted to get that back a little bit.

TOUR OFFICIAL: Anything else? Okay. Thanks.
