| 60 seconds in sport with leading American tennis player Jennifer Capriati |
June, 1st 2003
Q. What event are you in training for at the moment?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I'm in the middle of the French Open at Roland Garros. In
the build-up to the tournament I was in serious training for several weeks
after the disappointment of losing in the first round of the Australian Open.
Q. Who inspired you to take up your sport?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: My family, but especially my father, Stefano.
Q. Which athlete in your sport do you most admire?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras.
Q. And in any other sport?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Michael Jordan, because he has achieved so much.
Q. What event do you enjoy most in the sporting calendar?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Obviously all the Grand Slam events, but I prefer the US
Open just because it's staged in my country.
Q. What other sports do you play?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I like football and I play a bit of ping-pong.
Q. What was the last book you bought?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: A mystery novel.
Q. And the last CD?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: It was the latest album from Eve, an American female rapper.
Q. Would you recommend a life of sport to your children?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Definitely. I think that sport is art and a way of
expressing yourself. It's also good to exert yourself physically.
Q. At what moment in your life did you realise you
were going to make sport your career?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I've never known anything different, to be honest. I knew
tennis in the womb, probably even before I was born.
Q. What food or drink do you most miss when in training?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I love French fries, but I can't eat them now.
Q. What is your favourite TV programme?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Friends.
Q. What would you like to do once your sporting career comes to an end?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Some normal stuff — for instance, I would like to have a family.
Q. What is the pinnacle of your sporting achievement to date?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Winning a gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games,
and, of course, my three Grand Slam titles — two Australian Open victories
and one at the French.
Q. Are today's sportsmen overpaid?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I think that the baseball and basketball players who just
sit on the bench and don't do anything get too much money.
Q. What car do you drive?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I have a Ferrari, but I don't drive it much.
Q. Do you have a nickname?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Not that I know of.
Q. What bugs you most about being famous?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Dealing with the press is the bit I don't look forward to.
Q. What do you enjoy most about being famous?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Cutting in line — it's fun always being the first to get anything.
Q. What's your favourite piece of sporting memorabilia?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: My gold medal.
Q. If your house was on fire, what one item would you take with you as
you dashed to safety?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: My family. I wouldn't worry about anything else.
