Ladies German Open quarterfinal

May, 7th 2004
Capriati D Myskina 6-3, 6-2

Q. - (not audible)
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Right now it's a good win, but for different reasons. I am in the semi-final. I came back after a tough match and came back. I lost to Myskina once, so that's good.

Q. How were the conditions out there?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: They were quite difficult. I mean, in a way I think they favoured me. She likes a fast pace and it was pretty slow out there. Not that I like conditions like that either, but in these conditions you don't just come out there and blow someone away. You have to be very patient and work your way through. And the fitness plays a really big role too.

Q. Is this your best performance of the year so far?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Yes, probably. I have to say that I haven't played that many matches to begin with. I had a tough match yesterday. And Myskina is very tough to play. I am happy with the way I played.

Q. Thinking about it: You have a degenerative condition but managed to contain it well. How do you do that?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I was able to nip it in the butt that it won't get worse. I was getting a lot of therapy. I've been doing my exercises. I am trying to carry as little weight as possible. Now that I know what the problem is, I know how to move in order not to aggravate the area.

Q. Can you say how you move?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I just try to use my muscles more and not to move my back as much. I am trying to stay lower, use my legs more. I've always had pretty strong legs, so I might as well use them.

Q. Are you slowly getting your confidence back?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Yes, but that's something that doesn't happen over night. I mean you also don't lose your confidence over night. I just have to keep doing what I'm doing. So, hopefully I'll keep progressing. Also the fitness is such a key part of my game. Without that my game would almost be nothing. It's hard work and you have to be willing to do it.

Q. When you woke up after that match yesterday how were you feeling? Did you still feel the adrenaline or were you feeling tired?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: No. I was a bit sore in some spots, but not as usual. When you get up, as soon as the blood starts flowing… I was surprised how good I felt. So, I just went out and was ready to go.

Q. So, you were pleasantly surprised?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Yes. But I shouldn't be. With the confidence back, I should be expecting these things.

Q. Have you concluded a contract with Heinz?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Not yet. We haven't worked out any details. When you see us together, you'll know. I've seen him on the other side. He is a very nice, a super guy. He is very knowledgeable.

Q. Are you working on anything specific with him?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Basically nothing to change my game, it's just kind of bringing it out more and working on my strengths. Not too much. It's pretty easy and straight forward. It's just about working hard, a few things here and there.

Q. Probably there aren't that many mysteries left for you.
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: No, not for anybody really. It's not brain surgery or something.

Q. Yesterday you were serving harder than usual. Were you doing anything different, tossing the ball higher? Is this something you were working on?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: It's just trying to use my legs more. It's a rhythm thing. And I've been working on my shoulder to make it stronger. I always knew I had the possibility of serving harder. When I think of it, it is a weapon. But it's something I don't think of and hold it back.
