Capriati reaches third round

INDIAN WELLS - Pacific Life Open

Jennifer Capriati overcame some early-match jitters to advance to the third round of the Pacific Life Open with a 6-4, 6-2 win over qualifier Antonella Serra Zanetti. Capriati is hoping to improve her modest record at Indian Wells, where she reached the third round in 1996 and the second round in 2000 in her only prior appearances here.

"I got better as the match went on," Capriati said. "I had some jitters in the beginning – it's been a while since I've been here. I moved well and overall I'm pretty happy."

Commenting on the bright conditions on center court, Capriati said that her eyesight had fully recovered from an operation to remove sunspots. She wear sunglasses while practicing, but not during matches.

"The sensitivity has gone. It was bright out there, but it was tough for everyone. The eyesight began getting back to normal during the last part of the Australian trip, and certainly after that when I got home."

Capriati has not won a title in three prior tournaments this year and suffered a shock first-round loss as the two-time defending champion at the Australian Open.

"I'm not looking ahead at the rest of the year – I don't want to put expectations on myself. I've got no pressure. There are a lot of people ahead of me in the rankings. I just want to play loose and my tennis always gets better when that happens.

The break after the Australian Open helped me to clear my mind. I got my motivation back and it's like a fresh start. I got my priorities straight and I'm happy."

In the first round, Serra Zanetti defeated her older sister, Adriana.
