The long-awaited thropy is finally hers

Gennaio 2001
Australian Open

The next chapter in Jennifer Capriati's fairy tale has just begun. "Dreams can come true," she said after winning her first career Grand Slam title at the 2001 Australian Open in January. For many players, a Grand Slam trophy at 24 wouldn't feel all that long awaited, but Jennifer started her pro tennis tour 11 years ago. "I think after today and after what's happened, I'm no longer going to doubt myself in anything," she added.

Her win did not come easy. Along the way she had to defeat three of the world's best-known names in women's tennis: nine-time Grand Slam winner Monica Seles in the quarterfinals, Australian Open defending champion Lindsay Davenport in the semifinals and the world's top ranked player Martina Hingis in the final.

Jennifer knew it wasn't a fluke, and now the rest of the world does too. After she defeated the world's top-ranked player at the Australian Open in January, some people questioned whether she would ever be able to repeat the performance. She would and she has. If there were still doubts, Jennifer erased them from the minds of her critics. She, once again, defeated Hingins in the semifinals of French Open and went on to grab her second Grand Slam Trophy in a row, defeating Kim Clijsters in the finals.

As of June 10, Jennifer was the fourth ranked women's singles player on the WTA tour.
