| Capriati secures second Slam of 2001 |
Giugno 2001
Roland Garros
She defies what people think is possible.
She's the one to watch. She's never been better. And she's doing it all with
a smile on her face. Jennifer Capriati has not only made her tennis comeback,
she's proving herself to be one of the world's best. And after winning a
hard fought match and capturing the 2001 French Open (and her second Grand
Slam title in a row), nobody can deny that Jennifer is the current first
lady of tennis.
But at several points during the match, it almost looked
like Jennifer wouldn't get to flash her trademark smile at the Roland Garros
trophy presentation.
During the final match, against the number 12 seed,
Belgium's Kim Clijsters, Jennifer lost the first set 1-6. But her second
trademark, perserverance, helped her pull through and she won the second set
6-4. The real task came during the match's grueling third that Jennifer
finally closed down with a score of 12-10.
Now the real buzz about Jennifer will begin. The buzz that every tennis
player wants, but is afraid, to hear about herself: Can she win the Grand
Slam? Can she add the Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles to her trophy case?
Only three women have done it before, but we don't know of anybody who
deserves it more.
