Jen riesce a bissare il titolo del 2001, ancora contro
Martina Hingis, anche se questa volta in tre set, rimontando da una situazione
critica. Alleato in più di Jennifer in questo match è stato il clima
australiano: elevata umidità, assenza di vento e temperatura superiore ai 38°C,
che la campionessa italo-americana ha dimostrato di sopportare senz'altro di più
della fragile avversaria. Da sottolineare, in particolare, le dichiarazioni
(sempre altruiste) di Jen al termine dell'incontro: ha infatti dedicato la
vittoria innanzitutto ad alcuni suoi amici gravemente malati (ed in particolare
a Darren), dichiarando che quello che ha sofferto sul campo quel giorno, non era
nulla in confronto a quello che devono affrontare loro ogni giorno.
Queste le sue parole: "I was struggling on the court today but it's no comparison to a lot of the
friends who I have who are struggling right now, and especially one in particular right now, I'd like to say,
Darren, thanks for coming and I love you".

Cronaca della finale
Nel primo set la Hingis (che ha voglia di prendersi la rivincita), parte
aggressiva e si porta sul 3-0, con un break. Nel sesto gioco strappa nuovamente
il servizio alla Capriati (5-1) e si porta a servire per il primo set. Jennifer
reagisce e piazza il contro-break (5-2), tiene il suo turno di servizio (5-3) ed
infligge un secondo break alla Hingis, dopo aver annullato un set point (5-4).
Quando l'incontro sembra essere tornato in equilibrio, Jennifer cede per la
terza volta il servizio e si trova sotto di un set (6-4).
Nel secondo set
Jennifer parte come nel primo: perde il servizio e si trova ad inseguire sullo
0-3. Il match sembra ormai compromesso, ma il caldo torrido inizia a far vedere
i suoi effetti sulla giocatrice elvetica, che pare sempre più stanca: da questo
punto in poi, le giocatrici si fermano più tempo possibile tra un punto e
l'altro, per cercare un po' di refrigerio ed entrambe fanno una sosta
fisiologica di alcuni minuti. Sul 4-1 per la Hingis, Jennifer annulla un
break-point e tiene il servizio (4-2). Nel settimo la Hingis cede il turno di
battuta e Jen si porta sul 4-3, ma cede nuovamente il servizio (5-3) e la Hingis
è a un passo dal trionfo. Jennifer, però, non vuole mollare e recupera il break
di ritardo (5-4), annullando un match-point e raggiunge la Hingis sul 5-5. Sul
6-5 per la svizzera, Jen salva altri 2 match-point e raggiunge il tie-break. TIE
BREAK. Inizia a servire Martina Hingis: 0-1, 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-3, 3-3, 3-4, 4-4,
5-4, 5-5, 5-6 (Capriati ad un punto dal terzo set), 6-6, 7-6 (la Hingis ad un
punto dal match), 7-7, 7-8 (Capriati ad un punto dal terzo set), 7-9.
Il
terzo set appare in discesa: Martina Hingis sembra sfinita, mentre Jennifer
appare più fresca e determinata, avendo rimediato ad una situazione di punteggio
molto negativa. Inizia proprio lei a servire (1-0); nel game successivo, la
Hingis salva due palle del probabile ko e tiene il servizio (1-1), strappandolo
poi all'italo-americana e tornando in vantaggio (2-1). Jennifer non si abbatte e
fa subito il contro-break e tiene il successivo turno di servizio, annullando un
altro break-point. La Hingis non ha più energie fisiche e mentali e cede
definitivamente: dal 3-2, la Capriati infila 4 giochi consecutivi e si aggiudica
per la seconda volta consecutiva l'Open di Australia, diventando la prima
giocatrice ad aggiudicarsi un torneo Grande Slam, annullando 4 match-point all'avversaria.

CAPRIATI WINS SECOND AUSTRALIAN OPEN TITLE
Melbourne, Australia - Jennifer Capriati pulled her greatest comeback on court saving four match points to
defeat Martina Hingis 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 and claiming her second straight Australian Open title on Saturday at
Melbourne Park.
"I was down match points and it was such a struggle for me and I didn't know if I was really going to pull
that out or if I was going to win," said Capriati. "I just kept going, point by point, and things turned
around."
The match, played in heat nearing 100 degrees, featured long rallies, 15 breaks of serve, two bathroom breaks,
a 10-minute rest after the second set and several displays of anger.
After losing the first set 4-6, Capriati fell behind 0-4 but then saved three match points at 3-5 and 5-6 to
force a tie -breaker. She then saved a fourth one at 6-7 during the tie-break and finally claimed the set when
Hingis returned a wide backhand. Both players suffering from the unbearable heat conditions, agreed to take a
10-minute break before starting the third set. Hingis grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third. Capriati, confident from
her second set comeback, won the next two games and cruised to victory in 31 minutes.
"I felt like my head was all over the place, but after I lost the second set, she had the momentum," said Hingis.
"I didn't really believe in it anymore, even when I was up 2-1 (with a break in the third set)."
For Hingis who has now lost four consecutive Australian Open finals, that loss was even more disappointing as
she failed to capitalize on all of her four match points. Despite losing after being so close to winning a Grand
Slam title in three years, Hingis was satisfied with her performance.
"I exceeded my expectations at this tournament," she said. " I think I proved myself again that I can play really
good tennis and I can have the chance to beat anybody out there, so I've got to keep my head up and go for it.
Sometimes it takes a little longer," she said. "You can't expect everything happening right away. It is not like
you snap your fingers and you are going to win a Grand Slam. So I think I have to work even harder now and just
continue what I've been doing."
Capriati is the only woman to have saved four match points to win a Grand Slam title.
"I don't know which one was better for me, winning last year or winning this year," she said.
