Mastercard German Open 2° turno

07 maggio 2003
Capriati D Schiavone 6-4, 6-4

Q. You really had to fight hard to win that one.
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Yes. It was a good first red clay match. She is a tough opponent. I had to play really well.

Q. Are you satisfied?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: It could have been tougher. I hung in there, played the rallies. I was patient when I had to be and I was aggressive at the right moments. I am happy with the way I played. It was my first match on red clay.

Q. Do you feel that you are back to before the operation. Are you moving better?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Definetely, I am moving better. A few month after the operation, I really had to work extra harder, becsause I had fallen back and I was motivated for that. I definetely notice a difference now. Things a re a lot easier.

Q. You are renown for comebacks. Of course, this is a big comeback, but also in matches when you fall back you always come back. Where do you get the inspiration from?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I think that's just my character. Maybe other people give up. I don't, I dig deeper. I mean, I've also had good matches when I have been ahead and won. I think, I'm just a fighter. It takes something like that to really get me motivated, to make me dig deeper. It's more of a purpose.

Q. Is there something you think about or does it just come unconciously?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I think it is unconsciously, something that clicks. I just say to myself 'You're sick of losing.' You just get sick of being down. So, I just take it to the next level. Maybe sometimes I underestimate my opponent or underestimate myself. Then, I just ralize that it is not going to be easy and I take it to another level.

Q. A few months ago you said that you have altered your prioriteis, that you take yourself first and that this would probably be better for the tennis also. Have you been able to keep this up?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Yes, I have been able to maintain it. I feel positive about myself. I realized the most important things are relationships, relationships with myself, other people, my family. With everything going on in the world, every day is a special day and I realized that tennis is just tennis. I put things into perspective a little and that is important.

Q. This ist the 8th time you are here in Berlin. But so far this title is still missing on your record. Is this something that is in your head or do you only see it as a preparation for Roland Garros?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Oh, there is a lot of tennis, I haven't won (laughs). Any title is great, but obviously the Grand Slam tournaments are special. I expect myself to do as well as I can do, whatever that is. It's also a preparation.

Q. What do you think still keeps you from beating some of the players who are closer to you like Lindsay and Justine? You seem to keep losing to them in three sets.
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I have noticed that against other players that are lower ranked than I, I feel more confident, more aggressive. The ones that bug me are the ones that are closer. I feel more defensive. That is what might take me to a third set. I shouldn't feel so much pressure, just back up and get on my heels. I need to concentrate on my own game.

Q. I remember seeing you in a situation like this before, where you kept loosing every match in three sets and then you went to the Grand Slam and won it. Do you think this is similar?
JENNIFER CAPRIATI: I don't know whether this is a good sign. I don't want to look at it like that. I just take one match at a time.
